Who can sign up for this study?
To be eligible, a patient must be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, 21 years of age or older, born outside of the United States, self-identify as Chinese American or Chinese, have a family member who is involved in his/her diabetes care, be able to speak Cantonese and read/write in Chinese.
What is this study about?
This study will test the efficacy of a culturally-adapted diabetes behavioral intervention. It aims to improve type 2 diabetes management through community-academic partnerships and addresses cultural factors that affect disease management in the Chinese community. It is conducted in collaboration with Donaldina Cameron House, North East Medical Services (NEMS), and University of San Francisco.
What will happen in this study?
Eligible participants will participate in a six-session diabetes education program. This program focuses on common social, family and health care issues that arise for Chinese patients in their diabetes care and a review of basic diabetes management information. In addition, they will complete a questionnaire, once every 2 months for 5 times. Lastly, they will have blood drawn for laboratory tests, once every 4 months for 3 times.
How long will this study last?
Each participant will be followed for a period of 8 months. Participation requires approximately 16 hours in total.
Reimbursement: Participants will be paid up to $110 upon study completion.
