Who can sign up for this study? (basic inclusion and exclusion criteria) adults with type 2 diabetes at least 1 year, HbA1c of 7.5% or higher, can read and speak English, have a partner or spouse.
What is this study about? Provides personal assistance to improve diabetes management by educating patients and their partners and establishing specific behavioral plans and self-care goals.
What will happen in this study? You will be assigned to one of three study groups at random: a program that includes both patients and partners, a program that includes patients only, and a program than provides an abbreviated intervention for patients only. All three programs have been shown to improve outcomes. The program is delivered entirely by telephone, so there are no clinic or office visits; telephone appointments can occur on weekdays, evenings, or weekends. Before, during and after assessments will occur for all patients and partners.
How long will this study last? 12 months
Reimbursement: Yes, for each of the four assessments over the 12 months: partners = $20 per assessment, patients begin at $20 for the first assessment and increase to $50 for the last assessment.
